Thorn History

Thorn branded TVs were re-launched in Australian in June 2010 and the 65” (165cm) Smart 3D TV launch followed in February 2014. Thorn TV’s are available to customers throughout the Radio Rentals, Rentlo and RR network of stores. Thorn was a pioneer of TVs. In 1938, Thorn started manufacturing television sets under the Ferguson Brand name which it bought in 1936. The war brought a halt to broadcasting although Thorn resumed their production shortly after the war ended, releasing a new TV set in 1947. In 1956 Thorn introduced black and white TVs into their range of rental products available in Australia . They further expanded their range in 1968 with the addition of television brand Baird to its collection. In the 1980’s Thorn launched their range of remote controlled TV sets and VCR’s.

The Thorn brand has a long and fascinating history. Founded in the 1930’s in England and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1936. Radio Rentals Australia opened its doors on Tuesday 5th October 1937 and today has over 90 retail outlets nationwide under the brands of Radio Rentals, RR, RR Rentlo Reinvented and Rentlo. Thorn is a trusted, reliable, dependable consumer electronics and domestic appliance brand which is a powerful endorsement.
